Somewhere along the way, technology became a "thing" unto itself. We became enamored with speed and size and increasingly sophisticated software that could be thrown at hard problems. As time went on, this complexity was accepted as a natural consequence and we forgot that technology in general (and information technology in particular) is intended to support a business, social or solutions function. This new vision of technology has become an obstacle, a burden and an overly influential contributor to the discussion of what can we do instead of what should we do.
